Description
[FLORENCE] – View of the priory in Florence and the mayor’s palace, taken from the square in front of the Church of the Fathers of the Oratory. Paris, published by Beauvais, c. 1750; 340/490 mm, single sheet, coloured in the period and mounted. Perspective view of Florence. These perspective views are coloured engravings; they were generally produced between 1740 and 1820, and their format ranges from small folio to large folio. In all cases, these optical views depict the most popular tourist spots in European cities and are animated (featuring figures and carriages in the foreground). Numerous publishers competed to sell these views, which were very much in vogue at the time; these engravings were designed to be projected onto walls using a light-projecting device that employed mirrors and lenses.
