Description
[LA ROCHELLE] - A bird’s-eye view depicting the town and harbour of La Rochelle. Paris, published by Veuve Chapoulaud, c. 1750; 330/440 mm, single sheet, coloured contemporary and mounted. Perspective view of the harbour and city of La Rochelle. These perspective views are coloured engravings; they were generally produced between 1740 and 1820, and their format ranges from small folio to large folio. In all cases, these ‘optique’ views depict the most popular tourist spots in European cities and are animated (featuring figures and carriages in the foreground). Numerous publishers competed to sell these views, which were very much in vogue at the time; these engravings were designed to be projected onto walls using a light-projecting device that employed mirrors and lenses.
