Description
[MARAT] – The death of the patriot Marat. One of the greatest champions of the Constitution, murdered by a woman from Calvados on 13 July 1793. Paris, Rue de la Bucherie, c. 1793; 265/210 mm, single sheet, coloured in period. Anonymous aquatint from the Revolutionary period, accompanied by a highly patriotic song dedicated to the brave sans-culottes: ‘alarme’ rhymes with ‘larmes’. An identical black-and-white engraving is held at the Carnavalet Museum. The white margins of the engraving have been extensively annotated. Enclosed is an engraving taken from a late 19th-century newspaper – View of the Château de Fontainebleau.
