Description
ROUSSET (Lieutenant-Colonel) – A General History of the Franco-Prussian War (1870–1871). Paris, Librairie Jules Tallandier, 1910; large quarto, 507 + XV-491 + IX pp., publisher’s original green percaline cloth binding of the period, covers cold-stamped, decorated shagreen spine, titles, author and publishers’ names embossed in gold, all edges painted red. Both volumes. A standard reference work on the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Numerous black-and-white and colour illustrations, based on paintings by the most famous contemporary artists: battles, large-scale panoramas, portraits, French and German military figures, commemorative monuments, maps and separate plates. Of particular note at the end of Volume I is a magnificent fold-out panorama of the Battle of Rezonville on 16 August 1870, by Edouard Detaille. There is another fold-out panorama at the end of Volume II, depicting the Battle of Nuits on 18 December 1870, by Théophile Poilpot. In fine condition.
