Description
[TEISSIER] – A philological essay on the beginnings of printing in Metz and on the city’s printers, drawn from material for a literary, biographical and bibliographical history of Metz and its province. Metz, Dosquet and Tilliard, 1828; ; containing biographical notes; charters and public documents in the Romance and Germanic languages, etc. Metz, Verronnais, 1828; In-8, XI-494 pp., later binding (early 20th century) in black half-percale, plain spine, unadorned, title label in brown morocco. Frontispiece featuring a portrait of Abraham Fabert. First and only edition of this important work by Guillaume-Ferdinand Teissier, sub-prefect of Thionville, Knight of the Legion of Honour and member of the Academies of Metz and Strasbourg. Commissioned by the Metz Academy, this in-depth study of the establishment of printing in the Metz region and Lorraine, and more broadly still, remains an authoritative work, as the whole is of a rarity in terms of both comprehensiveness and relevance. The author takes great care to catalogue, as exhaustively as possible, the output of Metz and Lorraine’s printing houses, including their Gothic typefaces and engravings, providing an accurate and detailed description of these ancient volumes, along with fascinating and insightful entries on the printers of each century, the works that emerged from their presses, and the merits of these venerable editions.
