Description
ZELLER (Gaston) – The Reunification of Metz with France (1552–1648). Strasbourg, Les Belles Lettres, 1926; in-8, 502 + 402 pp., green half-calf bindings, spine with 4 raised bands, covers preserved. Both volumes. A thesis of the utmost importance for the history of Metz and France. The first part, ‘The Occupation’, demonstrates how, following Charles VII’s campaign in 1444, the concept of the Rhine as a frontier emerged as a logical consequence of the successful defence of Metz during its conquest in 1552. The second part, ‘Protection’, analyses the inexorable establishment of royal administration despite the upheavals of the Wars of Religion and the efforts of the Dukes of Lorraine to persuade the Emperor of the benefits of having such a neighbour in such a stronghold.
