Description
FÉNELON (François de Salignac, de la Motte) – The Works of Fénelon. Paris, published by Lefevre, 1835; quarto, frontispiece, XXLVIII-680 + 720 + 752 pp., red half-calf bindings, spines decorated and embossed, edges painted. François de Salignac de La Mothe-Fénelon (1651–1715), a 17th-century French theologian and writer, was Bossuet’s chief opponent on the subject of Quietist doctrine. The work *Les Aventures de Télémaque* led to the author’s banishment; he left for Flanders before returning to his archbishopric in Cambrai. It must be said that *The Adventures of Telemachus* is nothing other than a satire on the reign of Louis XIV, in which the monarch is portrayed as Idomeneus, the legendary king of Crete. An elegant 19th-century edition.
