Description
A gilded bronze clock topped by a figure of Napoleon Bonaparte seated on a rock, holding a book, with his hat and a map beside him. The quadrangular base is decorated in the centre with an eagle holding a sword in its talons, surrounded by ribbons and leaves, and a laurel wreath in its beak. The metal dial displays the time in Roman numerals, resting on a base decorated at the front with foliage scrolls and supported at the rear by two feet.
This famous scene depicts Napoleon in exile on Saint Helena, gazing out at the horizon and spending his days reading whilst awaiting a sign. The scene is emphasised by the eagle below, bringing him his sword and imperial crown as if to urge him to reclaim power.
19th century, key and pendulum supplied
Dimensions: 39 x 30 x 11 cm
(broken sword, one rear foot loose, signs of wear)
