Description
A beautiful case made of light-coloured solid wood, with an English-style mount. Resting on a bed of burgundy velvet is a fine pair of flintlock saddle pistols by Roussel of Rouen.
Smooth-bore octagonal barrels, 44 calibre, with one-pound rolling balls. Finished with a ‘dead leaves’ pattern and decorated with ground gold at the muzzle and breech. Round-bodied hammers, one bearing the signature ‘Roussel’ and the other ‘Rouen’. Round swan-neck hammers, round iron basins, and spring-loaded hammers screwed from the inside. Iron-mounted weapons, oval-shaped, bevelled-sided caps with a concave step, engraved on the underside with a heliotrope flower set against a floral urn motif at the front, with rod channels. Horn rods, one with a bullet extractor and one with a string washer. Beautiful mount in varnished havana walnut, checkered at the grip with a fine checkered pattern in seed grain.
Total length of pistols: 220 mm.
Mechanism in working order.
The partially filled case also contains a single-cavity round ball mould, the handle of which doubles as a screwdriver. A white metal oil can and a few original round balls in one compartment, and two spare flints in the other. The right-angled slope of the grips on these pistols is almost certainly indicative of production during the First Empire. A beautifully crafted weapon. The front plate of the frame on one of the pistols has been very neatly re-glued at the front, near the barrel retaining pins.
