Description
A highly sought-after officer’s sabre of the Revolutionary Chasseurs, in the Montmorency style. A fine curved blade with a flat back and a double-edged edge, featuring a fuller and a groove. The blade, blued to one-third of its length, still retains its full blue finish. The pan-shaped hilt is adorned with fine engravings in gold leaf framing the proud motto ‘Vaincre ou mourir’ (Conquer or die). Gilded and chiselled bronze mountings, symmetrical openwork guard featuring a lictor’s fasces. Long-tailed cap, pommel in the form of an antique helmet with a plume, single guard branch, flat and widening towards the guard plate with two ribbon-wrapped horns; the wooden tang is covered in shagreen and filigree-worked with a band of copper wound into the hollows of the tang, framed by two copper wires. In its leather scabbard (damaged and split in two places), three brass fittings cut into brackets. Pommel with an oval button and suspension rings. Guard with a symmetrical tip. Condition 1.
