Description
A beautiful and interesting sword from the Egyptian Institute (Egyptian expedition). The triangular blade, with three hollow sides, is blued to one-third of its length and embellished with engraved motifs of trophies of arms, crowns and decorative patterns, enhanced with ground gold. Beautiful chiselled gilt-bronze mountings. Pommel with a prominent, rounded rivet, four-sided. The front and back faces bear a fine palmette in relief. Single, flat crossguard with floral decoration in relief; symmetrical guard plate re-pierced with a spider’s web design and fern-shaped floral motifs; tang fitted with two mother-of-pearl plates on the faces. The visible plate is inlaid with an Egyptian-style decoration. The sides of the mount are highlighted by a band engraved with a vine and grape cluster motif. Quillon arched forwards with zoomorphic decoration. In its worn but complete leather scabbard. Buttoned pommel, round-ended guard with a matching purple velvet scabbard cover. A slight, insignificant chip on the rear mother-of-pearl plate; the blue of the blade and the gilding on the mount are largely intact.
