Description
ELOFFE (Madame) [Pseudonym of Adélaïde Henriette DAMOVILLE], REISET (Gustave-Armand Henri de): Fashions and Customs in the Time of Marie-Antoinette. Journal of Madame Eloffe, fashion merchant and dressmaker, official lingerie maker to the Queen and the ladies of her court. Paris, Firmin-Didot, 1885. 2 large 8vo volumes, publisher’s decorated binding, full brown shagreen, large decorations on the covers with Marie-Antoinette’s coat of arms in the centre, gilt edges.
First edition based on the manuscript of the lingerie dressmaker Adélaïde Henriette Damoville, known as Madame Eloffe (1759–1805), the famous dressmaker to Marie-Antoinette and the royal family. The work is richly illustrated with 200 engravings, including 110 large plates, 68 in colour, accompanied by 6 photographs, 3 facsimiles and 7 pages of musical notation. It features a variety of techniques: engravings, lithographs, heliographs and etchings, illustrating fashion trends, hats, a few portraits, as well as carriages and furnishings. Madame Eloffe meticulously records the outfits she created between 1787 and 1793, detailing the intended recipients of the garments (the queen being the principal beneficiary), the quantities, qualities and origins of the fabrics and materials, as well as the cost of each item.
