LE TANNEUR (Jacques): In the Shade of the Plane Trees, Chronicles of the Basque Provinces. Drawings and watercolours by the author. Bordeaux, Raymond Picquot, 1932. In-4°, Bradel binding in half vellum, painted spine, gilt head, cover and spine preserved. First edition printed in a run of 700 copies, one of the 640 copies on tinted vellum. Francis Jammes provides the preface to this work, which is a collection of anecdotes and ethnographic, aesthetic and historical observations on the Basque Country. It includes, amongst other things, a brief history of bullfighting in Bayonne, chapters on the villages of Fontarabie, Aïnhoa and Urdax, on the distinctive features of Basque chapels, hermitages and houses, and on the remarkable conservation work of the Basque Museum in Bayonne.
