Description
FRANCE/MOROCCO (WW2): A fascinating collection of official and private photographic archives belonging to the French Consul-General Robert Lemaire (1889–1966).
Stationed in Morocco with the Cherifian government from the 1920s onwards, this statesman preserved numerous images of visits and meetings. Notably during the Second World War and the organisation of the Casablanca Conference at the Hôtel Anfa in January 1943. These archives feature several French and foreign military and administrative figures, as well as artists and prominent figures, including the Consul’s personal acquaintances (Frédéric WEISGERBER, amongst others).
9 themed albums containing numerous large-format photographs, including: Visits by General NOGUES / Visit by General D’AMADE (1927) / Tirailleurs and a meeting with LYAUTEY / Colonial life in the 1920s / Life in the metropolis and holidays / Colonial life in the 1930s / Private life and descendants in the 19th and 20th centuries / Scenes from daily life / Traditional trades.
A significant collection of photographs, some of which are official, dated and potentially unpublished, featuring high-ranking American and French officers at the Casablanca Conference in 1943, notably Generals Patton and Clark. Dated 13 January 1943, a photograph of General Patton’s arrival, walking alongside General Nogues and followed by Robert Lemaire.
Previous and subsequent visits and meetings are also depicted, featuring figures such as General Weygand and Generals Desré and Puaux. Queen Marie of Romania, King Mohammed V of Morocco and Grand Vizier Mohammed El-Mokri also feature prominently in these archives. There are also several signed photographs.
Numerous family and private photographs
We are including a collection of 16 mm film reels (over 60 reels) and a handwritten note regarding their content (1930s/1940s): journeys, visits, receptions and the Sultan’s funeral. No guarantee of an exact correspondence between the handwritten notes and the content of the reels.
The collection is in good condition and the vast majority of the images are clearly visible. Mr Lemaire’s gaze, often directed straight at the camera, remains the common thread running through this fascinating collection, which bears witness to the French presence in Morocco and its significant role during the Liberation.
