Description
Auguste CAIN (1821-1894) Large wader catching two frogs Brown-black patina bronze proof Signed on the base 15 x 41.5 cm Provenance: Imperial collection of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph (husband of Sissi Empress) at Bad Ischl Castle. The Emperor of Austria was a great hunter and assiduous collector of French bronzes, in particular by Pierre-Jules Mène, since the large model of the Scottish hunter with a fox adorned his private study. (Auguste Cain was Pierre-Jules Mène's son-in-law and a world-renowned sculptor). This bronze comes from the estate of the Emperor's intendant, who worked at Bad Ischl Castle, to which Emperor Napoleon III was invited on several occasions by François Joseph.
