Description
19th century Roman school, after Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael (1483-1520)
Portrait of a young woman, known as La Fornarina, the painter's mistress.
Oil on canvas.
87 x 63,5 cm.
Restoration.
An elegant copy of one of Raphael's masterpieces, probably depicting Margarita Luti, daughter of the baker Francesco Luti da Siena, hence her nickname La Fornarina (fornaio in Italian, fornaro in the dialect of Rome). The original, dating from 1518-1519, is kept in Rome in the National Gallery of Ancient Art in the Palazzo Barberini (oil on panel, 85 x 60 cm, inv. 2333).
Provenance: Château de Canari (Cap Corse), Marcantetti family.
The Castle of Canari is the former residence of the Cenci family. The full title of the Cenci de Canari was "Barons of Canari, Nonza and Ogliastro" from 1556. The Cenci family thus controlled three baronies.
The last representative of the family to own Canari Castle was Maria Vittoria Cenci, Marquise d'Albon, who was living in Rome at the time with her French husband. She sold the castle to the Mattei family, who in turn sold the barony in 1880 to Toussaint Marcantetti, a pharmacist from Bastia and mayor of Canari. His three children were born at the château.
