Description
[BERGERAT Émile]
Paris, 4 February 1891
Autograph card signed in black ink on Le Figaro headed paper, 26 rue Drouot, addressed to "M. Nicoli" in Paris, 4 February 1891.
9.5 x 12 cm.
Interesting letter in which writer and journalist Émile Bergerat thanks his correspondent for sending him an issue of Le Drapeau containing a text devoted to his work La Chasse au mouflon ou Petit voyage philosophique en Corse.
In it, Bergerat expresses his admiration for the island: "...things I must have guessed about Corsica instead of seeing them as they are worth seeing..." and adds: "...if my very imperfect book has been able to be useful to your wonderful island and at least prove my admiration for it...".
Son-in-law of Théophile Gautier and a contributor to Le Figaro, Émile Bergerat (1845-1923) was one of the leading Parisian literary figures of the late 19th century. This card is an interesting reminder of how his work on Corsica was received by the island's intellectual circles during the Belle Époque.
Good condition.
