Description
CHINA, late 19th–early 20th century – Six-panel lacquer screen decorated with a scene depicting the Silk Road. Starting from the left, a scene of silk weaving alongside a dignitary and his lady, set against a backdrop of a caravan. The right-hand side is adorned with a city in the background and figures drinking tea beside a dromedary. The border features stylised motifs and flowers. The faces and bodies are highlighted with mother-of-pearl and bone. 183 x 40 cm per panel (The lacquer is flaking in places and there are some restorations; a large proportion of the faces have been restored).
