Description
CHINA – JIAQING PERIOD (1796–1820)
A narrow-necked, bottle-shaped porcelain vase with polychrome enamelled decoration in the ‘Fencai’ style of the ‘Famille Rose’ school, depicting lotus flowers in foliage bearing the symbol of the ‘Three Abundances’ (‘sanduo’) – pomegranates, peaches and finger-shaped lemons – on a white ground. The neck, flanked by two handles in the form of archaic dragons glazed in red iron glaze, is adorned on each side with a ‘shou’ character (longevity) in gold enamel surmounted by a bat. The foot is encircled by a frieze of pink Greek motifs and a frieze of stylised lotus petals. On the reverse of the base, the six-character Jiaqing mark in red ‘fear’ script in zhuanshu on a turquoise-blue ground. (restorations with metal clasps on the neck, a small chip, wear to the gold enamel).
H. 35.7 cm
The combination of these three fruits forms the symbol known as the ‘Three Abundances’ (sanduo), evoking the wish for many sons, a long life and blessings.
