Bouguereau made numerous studies for this painting, including a very accomplished one of the man seated in the foreground. This is almost certainly a studio work, with the father in the foreground in exactly the same position as in our painting, with only the stone band at the entrance replaced by a stool and a drape covering the model's nudity.
There is also a watercolour that reproduces our painting exactly.
