DENIS Maurice (1870–1943) "The Sermon on the Mount – Perros-Guirec" (circa 1928) Oil on cardboard, titled and marked “Perros – la Tour” (Silencio) on the reverse, with annotations of dimensions, the date “1927”, a hand-drawn pencil sketch and the monogram “MD” within a circle (Slight wear and stains). H: 36.5 cm x W: 49.5 cm (As seen) This small sketch for *The Sermon on the Mount* (oil on canvas, height 80 cm x width 100 cm) was painted in the moorland near Silencio in Perros-Guirec, Maurice Denis’s holiday home in Brittany. Jesus is depicted here preaching to a group of people, amongst whom, in the finished version of the painting, members of the artist’s family can be recognised (the group seated in the foreground, from left to right): Robert Boulet, his son-in-law, Dominique Denis and Élisabeth Denis holding Jean-Baptiste Denis. Notes and references: The work was exhibited at the “Ar Skol Ploumanac’h” Museum from July to September 2019. Two preparatory drawings are recorded in a sketchbook from the summer of 1928. This work is listed in the Catalogue Raisonné of Maurice Denis’s paintings, currently being compiled under the direction of Claire Denis and Fabienne Stahl, under catalogue number 927.0012. Provenance: The artist’s estate. Jean-François Denis Collection (by descent). Various private collections.
