A nautical sextant in natural and patinated brass, with a silver-plated graduated scale, complete with its alidade, mirrors, coloured filters and sighting tube. The scale bears the inscription:
‘Lorieux, A. Hurlimann, successors in Paris (3046)’.
Presented in its original mahogany case with compartments, containing several eyepieces, filters and accessories. Interior label from A. Hurlimann – Ponthus & Therrode, manufacturers of precision instruments, 6 rue Victor-Considérant, Paris, together with a care guide.
A Parisian piece from the early 20th century, circa 1900–1914. Ponthus & Therrode took over from Hurlimann around 1900 and set up in Rue Victor-Considérant around 1902. Similar sextants are held in the collections of the Science Museum and the Smithsonian.
