DESIGN - Georges NELSON (1908–1986) & MOBILIER INTERNATIONAL (publisher) Modular floor-to-ceiling bookcase, ‘CSS’ (Comprehensive Storage System) model, designed in 1957 for Herman Miller; French edition by Mobilier International, circa 1970. Frame comprising four anodised aluminium uprights with a rectangular cross-section (approx. 2.5 cm), with adjustable chrome-plated feet. White laminate units with aluminium edging, supported by aluminium brackets: – six shelves (two per section); – a drop-front cabinet with internal compartments (four dividers), flat aluminium handle; – a cabinet with two hinged doors and an internal shelf, flat aluminium handles; – an open base unit with two shelves (central bay). That is: 4 uprights, 8 shelves and 2 units, across three bays. H. approx. 295 cm (adjustable uprights) – W. approx. 255 cm – D. 47 cm. Shelves: 83 x 33 cm; units: W. 83 – D. 47 – H. 37 cm. Manufacturer’s stamp ‘Mobilier International, 162 bd Voltaire, Paris’ on the inside of both units. As is: uneven yellowing and tarnishing on certain parts (notably the drop-down cabinet), marks, scratches and minor knocks on some shelves; sound structure, complete and functional set.
