Oil on canvas, signed lower left, depicting a Saharan oasis, a village and a wadi at the foot of the mountains.
Panoramic composition: in the foreground, date palms and oleanders in bloom on a dune; in the centre, a wadi and a village with earthen terraces dominated by a domed marabout; in the background, the rocky ridges of the mountains beneath a clear sky. Thick impasto, a light and luminous colour palette.
View probably taken in southern Algeria, the Ziban oasis or the foothills of the Aurès Mountains.
In its original carved wooden frame in the Moorish style, with a geometric decoration of lozenges and diamond points (minor imperfections and micro-cracks). Reused canvas: on the reverse, a painted inscription ‘EXPOSITION’ partially covered by a coat of whitewash and a pencil sketch of a vase. Minor scuffs and wear. H. 35 – W. 110 cm approx.; H. 65 – W. 136 cm approx. with the frame.
