Description
[DALI] BIBLIA SACRA, Vulgate edition, revised by order of Pope Sixtus V and published under the authority of Pope Clement VIII, illustrated with works by Salvador Dalí. Milan, Rizzoli, 1967–1969. 5 folio volumes (approx. 50 x 39 cm). Publisher’s full fawn goatskin binding, spine with raised bands richly decorated with gilded floral scrolls, title and volume numbers gilded, in slipcases edged in leather with ivory moiré silk endpapers. Latin text from the Vulgate, set in typefaces modelled on Aldus Manutius’s incunabula. Illustrated with 105 full-page colour plates based on watercolours and gouaches by Salvador Dalí (1963–1964). Limited edition of 1,797 copies. This copy, no. 211, is one of 1,499 copies of the ‘luxus’ edition on watermarked laid paper, with a signed certificate from the publisher. Included: a silver (800) cast of Dalí’s hand, monogrammed ‘G Dalí’ beneath a crown, mounted on a leather-covered plaque, presented to subscribers of the edition. In excellent condition. A few rare instances of slight rubbing on the spines (cover of vol. III); the slipcases are rubbed and slightly stained.
