JAPAN, Meiji period (1868–1912)
A large, lidded incense burner in patinated bronze, baluster-shaped, resting on a tripod base featuring stylised phoenixes. The body is richly decorated with relief carvings of dragons soaring amongst the clouds, embellished with side handles depicting dragons in the round. The lid is surmounted by a naturalistic rock supporting a falcon with outstretched wings.
