Description
A Second Empire-era carabiniers’ breastplate, Model 1854, made of sheet steel plated with brass, comprising a backplate and a front plate. The breastplate bears, at its centre, a steel medallion in the shape of a radiant sun, upon which is affixed an oval brass badge stamped with the imperial eagle on a sandblasted background and framed by laurel branches. The breastplate is marked ‘Manufacture Impériale de Châtellerault September 1861, 2nd Size – Extra Width No. 475’. The backplate, edged with brass rivets, is fitted at the top with two leather straps (truncated and with missing tips) covered by a double brass chain of interlaced round links with a brass clasp. Backrest marked ‘Manufacture Impériale de Châtellerault, May 1865, 2nd Size – Extra Width No. 479’. The leather belt is missing.
