Fernand DUBOIS (1861–1939) Sphinx trinket tray, circa 1898 In silver-plated bronze, signed and monogrammed. Provenance: The artist’s family Note: This trinket tray, featuring a mythological motif, fits perfectly within the Symbolist movement that was in vogue in Brussels at the very end of the 19th century. Fernand Dubois took part in exhibitions organised by the Groupe des XX and later by the Cercle de la Libre Esthétique; here we can see a nod to the famous ‘Mysterious Sphinx’ by Charles Van der Stappen, of whom Dubois was a pupil, as well as the influence of his fellow artist Fernand Khnopff, whose work frequently explored the theme of the winged woman.
