Baldassare Franceschini, Christ showing his wounds, private collection, Florence
Our drawing is preparatory to one of Franceschini's most famous and often copied compositions, the prototype of which reappeared in 2000 and is in a private collection in Florence (A. Grassi, R. Spinelli and M.C. Fabbri, Volterrano: Baldassarre Franceschini (1611-1690), Florence, 2013, cat.122).
Prior to this discovery, the figure of Christ was linked to two lost paintings cited by Baldinucci: "Christ ready to open his wounds (oval painting) and a "Christ crowned with thorns" or "Ecce homo" (Notizie dei Professori di Disegno... Ranalli edition vol. V, Florence, 1847, p.177 and 191).
By virtue of its style and technique, this leaf belongs to the end of Volterrano's career, in the 1680s.
The iconography, sometimes confused with the Ecce homo, has its source in the medieval Vir dolorum. Franceschini may have been inspired by the terracotta attributed to Dello Delli that stood on the door of the Chiostro delle Ossa, the cemetery of the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence (now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London A.43-1937).
The satyr's head has been compared with a drawing in the Uffizi Museum (op. cit. p.363, fig.1) and is thought to be preparatory to a lost painting, Hope Nurtures Love (op. cit. cat. OP 76, p.363).
