Jacques Courtois, Battle scene, Palazzo Corsini, Rome (Inv. 389)
The sheet we are presenting here stands out from the body of drawings by Jacques Courtois because of its large format, which is particularly rare.
The only comparable works are Combat de cavalerie (pen and brown ink, grey wash, 460 x 795 mm) in the Musée du Louvre (INV 25692, Recto) and La Bataille de Josué (pen and brown ink, bistre wash and white highlights, 235 x 554 mm), preparatory work for a fresco in the Palazzo del Quirinale in Rome.
Our drawing is preparatory for a painting in the Galleria nazionale del Palazzo Corsini in Rome (Inv. 389).
