Description
Frédéric Charles de VERNON (1858-1912). An Art Nouveau brooch in yellow gold 750°°°° set with two carved ivory profiles of women standing out against an enamelled landscape background. The stretched lines of the setting are embellished with floral motifs adorned with navette sapphires and a diamond. Signed. France circa 1903. Master hallmark (half) eagle head hallmark. Dim. 3.4 cm : Gross weight : 9.19g Accompanied by its CITES certificate n° DE-DA-260526-1 Designated as a sculptor and engraver of medals by Vever -La Bijouterie Française 1800-1900, Vernon began his apprenticeship with the sculptor and medallist Paulin Tasset. He then went on to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and launched his career by taking part in major exhibitions and competitions (such as the Salon des Artistes Français in 1884 and the Universal Exhibitions of 1889 and 1900). Bibliography: Vever Tome III: situates some of his creations as a sculptor and engraver of medals. A piece with a very similar design is photographed in Alastair Duncan's Paris Salons 1895-1914. Tome II. The designers L-Z, 1994, p 251. Finally, another brooch very similar to ours is referenced by Beatriz Chadour Samson & Sonya Newell Smith.
