Mademoiselle George was a famous tragedienne, the most remarkable of her time according to Victor Hugo, who said that she "passes, as she pleases, and without effort, from the tender to the terrible pathos". She was the mistress of Lucien Bonaparte and later of Napoleon Bonaparte, who was Consul at the time. She was hugely successful during the Empire, the Restoration and right up to the end of her career, and was acclaimed on European tours. Here she is wearing a hairstyle that was fashionable around 1835-1840. Jules Vernet, an excellent miniaturist, had a particularly large clientele among the actors of his time.
