Estimate €2,000 - €3,000
Description
Léopold MORICE (1843 - 1920) Portrait of a man in bust form, probably a Roman known as "Pseudo-Vitellius", after the bust in the Grimani collection in Venice (16th c.). Stone Signed "L. Morice" and dated 1860 on the side at the base of the bust. Height: 64 cm A small accident restored to the nose; minor scratches. Biography: Léopold Morice was a sculptor born in Nîmes (the date 1843 is attested to by the Nîmes town registry office, whom we thank). He trained in the early 1860s in the workshops of Auguste Bosc (a pupil of J. Pradier) and then François Jouffroy, before entering the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts and exhibiting at the Salon from 1868. From the 1870s onwards, he received numerous commissions, particularly public ones, from various towns in the Gard (Nîmes, Pompignan, Le Vigan) and Hauts de France regions, as well as from the city of Paris. His most famous commission was the Monument à la République, inaugurated in 1883 on the Place de la République in Paris and designed with his brother Charles (born 1848), an architect. Related works: This bust based on the one in the Grimani collection in Venice known as "pseudo-Vitellius" was widely copied from the 16th century onwards, in stone, marble(s) and plaster versions. The Musée du Louvre holds a marble copy (MR 684) that may have inspired Léopold Morice. Our bust could therefore be an early work by the sculptor. Provenance: Private collection from Nîmes since the 1950s, then by descent.
