Description
Scale model of a house, South-East Asia (Lana people?). Scale model of a house (spirit house?) carved from a single block of wood. Rising from a quadrangular plinth with a serrated decoration are four smooth quarter-columns supporting a roof with two gables topped by finials. The lintels between the smooth quarter-columns are adorned with a serrated pattern. The frames of the gables are also decorated with serrations. The tips of each gable are topped by an extension resembling horse’s ears. These extensions evoke a common feature of houses and temples in the Southeast Asian cultural sphere. The ridge line shows a slight concavity, another architectural feature characteristic of this geo-cultural area. This scale model likely represents a place of worship and therefore serves as an altar or spirit house, a common feature of the material and spiritual culture of this region of the world. Peoples of South-East Asia, the Indochinese Peninsula or tribal Indonesia (?), South-East Asia. Without plinth. H: Estimated date: 20th century (second half?). H: 66.5 cm Provenance: French private collection. Comparative reference: - lot 124, sale of 13 July 2023, Leland Little (American auction house, Hillsborough, North Carolina).
