Transcription of the letter:
“My dear Senator and dear Colleague,
You were kind enough to forward to me the invitation from the municipality of Nontron, asking the Government of the Republic to pay tribute, in Nontron on the 16th of this month, to the children of the town who died in 1870–71.
You added that this ceremony, which will officially begin at half past one, would be strictly secular in nature, a condition which requires the presence of a representative of the executive branch.
You have also expressed to me your wish to see the schoolchildren gather with their teachers around the war memorial, so that they may derive a wholesome and lasting impression from this patriotic ceremony.
I have the honour of informing you that, under these specific conditions, and in response to this morning’s request, there is now nothing to prevent a delegate from the Minister of War from coming to Nontron.
I am sending copies of this letter to the Prefect, General Picart and the Prefect of the Dordogne.
