PREHISTORIANS. Original period photograph of the members of the "International Congress of Prehistoric Archaeology" in Copenhagen in 1869. Approximately 16 x 21.6 cm. Mounted on card (23.7 x 30.5 cm). Marginal tears without damaging the photograph. One fold.
Rare photograph showing the most eminent prehistorians of the time, in costume, wearing hats or top hats. The names of these scientists have been written in the margins. Some of these names are autograph signatures. They include Capellini, Vaillant, Carcenac, Hébert, Personnat, Gervais (from the Natural History Museum), Linas, Ibsen, Jacobsen, Bournonville, Hildebrand, Quatrefages and many foreign scientists.
The International Congress of Prehistoric Anthropology and Archaeology was set up in 1865 by Gabriel de Mortillet and Édouard Desor to promote prehistoric research and studies and standardise them at international level.
