Jean Georges BISSINGER (1836–1912) Oval brooch in yellow gold (750‰) set with an onyx cameo depicting a woman’s profile, surrounded by old-cut diamonds. Late 19th century. Signed ‘G BISSINGER’ on the reverse, numbered 2573. Dimensions: 3.7 x 3 cm. Gross weight: 13.7 g. Johan Georg Bissinger was one of the greatest gemstone engravers. Born in Germany, he settled in Paris. At the 1878 World’s Fair, Bissinger exhibited 112 gemstones, many of which were inspired by Renaissance cameos, coins and medallions from the ‘Cabinet des Médailles’ at the National Library. His highly prized works were often set by Frédéric Boucheron or Giuliano. His pieces feature in the world’s leading collections of gem engraving and in museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the MET Museum in New York. - Expert: Annabelle Cukierman
