Description
French School, c. 1640, a follower of Simon VOUET. “Madonna and Child”
Oil on canvas. 61x52cm. Frame from the Rhône Valley, made of lime wood carved with scallop shells and gilded. Previous restorations and areas of loss. Two works sometimes attributed to Nicolas Chaperon, featuring this same composition, can be linked to our previously unpublished painting: a drawing at the Fabre Museum in Montpellier [1] and a painting formerly held at the Museum of Bob Jones University in Greenville [2]. The group of two figures and the entablature are the same, but the background opens out onto a landscape rather than a curtain, as in our painting.
These works date from the artist’s early years in Vouet’s studio, either towards the end of his apprenticeship or when he began working independently in the second half of the 1630s. He draws on elements from many of his master’s half-length Madonnas [3], combining them without being exactly identical to Vouet’s originals.
