Description
AUDEMARS PIGUET Royal Oak Men’s Watch – Tropical / Series D Ref. 14790 ST. No. 9xx, circa 1993 An exceptional men’s sports watch, originally designed in 1972 by Gérald Genta. The Royal Oak takes its name from the octagonal cannons fitted to Royal Navy ships. This piece has spent over 20 years in a safe and can be said to have hardly ever been worn, hence the so-called ‘safe patina’ on the dial. In this series, most dials have developed a ‘tropical’ appearance (the paint has been burnt away by the tritium gas from the hour markers, revealing the gold of the dial). This reference was produced between 1992 and 2006. A large-aperture, faceted tonneau-shaped case in brushed steel with a screw-down caseback engraved with ‘Royal Oak’ (signed No. 9xx / D43xxx). An octagonal brushed steel bezel set with 8 visible 18-carat white gold screws. MK2 dial (produced 1993–2000), originally an anthracite grey ‘tapestry’ finish that has faded to a ‘tropical’ chocolate colour, with a date window at 3 o’clock, applied hour markers with tritium filling and logo at 6 o’clock, luminescent baton-style hands in white gold. Original non-screw-down nut-shaped crown. Steel bracelet integrated into the case with stylised links and original AP folding clasp. Movement: Audemars Piguet-signed automatic mechanical calibre / 2125 based on Jaeger-LeCoultre No. 400xxx Swiss Diameter: 36 mm Condition: Very good condition (prestigious AP presentation box in special boutique wood)
