Description
"Rosa Mystica" religious medal in 750‰ yellow and rose gold depicting the Virgin Mary in profile, France, eagle’s head hallmark – Diameter approx. 1.9 cm – Weight approx. 1.94 g.
COMMENT: Rosa mystica literally means ‘Mystical Rose’. It is one of the traditional titles given to the Virgin Mary in the Litany of Loreto: Rosa mystica, ora pro nobis (‘Mystical Rose, pray for us’).
The phrase is primarily symbolic. In medieval Christian tradition, the rose became a symbol of beauty, perfection, purity and divine love. Applied to Mary, it evokes the one in whom the Incarnation is mysteriously fulfilled: a spiritual beauty entirely turned towards God.
There is also an important Marian dimension associated with the thornless rose. An ancient tradition associates thorns with the Fall and sin: Mary, conceived without sin according to Catholic doctrine, is thus compared to a rose preserved from the thorns of sin. Hence medieval expressions such as rosa sine spina (‘rose without thorns’).
