COMMENT: The inscription ‘SUIVT LA COUR’, an abbreviation of ‘suivant la Cour’, refers to Edme-Jean Causard’s status as the King’s Clockmaker accompanying the Court. It indicates his membership of the privileged merchants and craftsmen in the King’s retinue, who enjoyed royal privileges allowing them to practise their trade in the King’s service and to accompany him on his travels. In the mid-18th century, Causard was granted the status of privileged merchant-watchmaker to the King and practised on Rue Saint-Honoré in Paris.
