Description
BASED ON ANCIENT EGYPT, Ritual bowl supported by a pair of human feet (Bowl with human feet), tinted and varnished resin, signed “Reproduction from the Louvre Museum - ‘RMN’ and ‘MMA’ on the soles of the feet - H. approx. 8.5 cm x D. approx. 12.5 cm (slight scratches and knocks)
COMMENT: our resin object is inspired by a polished red terracotta bowl, now held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (MET, No. 10.176.113) and dating from the Nagada I (late phase) to Nagada II periods, i.e. approximately 3,700 to 3,450 BC. The hemispherical shape is typical of the pottery of this period, known as ‘Red Polished Ware’, made from Nile clay.
The Nagada culture developed in Upper Egypt (the southern part of the country) during the Predynastic Period. This crucial period saw the emergence of a social hierarchy, an elite that accumulated prestige goods, and the earliest forms of hieroglyphic writing. The vast majority of the objects found come from a funerary context; the deceased were buried in pits, surrounded by offerings intended to accompany them into the afterlife.
