Description
NIGERIA, Pair of anthropomorphic statuettes in patinated bronze of the Edan Ogboni type, depicting the Earth deity Onile in his male and female forms, Yoruba people – H. 25 x L. 10 cm x W. 6.5 cm approx. (in good overall condition) COMMENT: The Yoruba are the largest ethnic group in Nigeria. Among them, the Ogboni form a secret society and a very powerful traditional institution. The ‘Edan Ogboni’, such as those offered for sale here, are objects used by this society during rituals of meditation, purification or judgement. They symbolise the founding ancestors, the duality between masculine and feminine, and between Heaven and Earth, and embody the very presence of the god Onile, the deity of the Earth and its protector. Onile is generally depicted in both his feminine and masculine forms.
