Description
Emile RALAMBO (1879–1963) – MADAGASCAR, *Rice and the Vahila*, 1923, oil on canvas, signed and dated in red in the bottom right-hand corner – approx. 39 x 60 cm (re-stretched and with a large restoration patch on the reverse)
COMMENT: Rice (‘vary’ in Malagasy) traditionally forms the staple of the diet, particularly in the Central Highlands. The landscapes of terraced rice fields around Antananarivo and in the Merina and Betsileo regions are iconic. Our painting appears to depict the ancestral technique of ‘ranon’ampango’; after cooking, water is poured into the pot where a layer of rice has been toasted, and it is then heated. This produces a hot drink with a slightly roasted flavour, consumed after a meal.
