Description
Jacques COUCHÉ, The Abbé de FONTENAI, The Gallery of the Palais Royal, engraved from the paintings of the various schools represented therein: with a brief account of the painters’ lives and a historical description of each painting by the Abbé de Fontenai, Paris, J. Couché and J. Bouilliard, 1782. 2 folio volumes, engraved dedication to the Duke of Orléans adorned with a vignette bearing his coat of arms, plates engraved on copper by J. Aliamet (the King’s engraver) and others after Charles Le Brun, Annibal Carracci, François Albane, Rubens, Rembrandt and Caravaggio; plates protected by serpentine paper; half-basane leather, smooth spines – approx. 56 x 36 cm (foxing spots, slight warping, slight tears to the corners and caps, generally good condition)
COMMENT: During the Regent’s reign, the Palais Royal gallery housed 485 paintings. This collection was regarded as the rarest and most comprehensive to be found. At the time of the National Assembly of 1790, the Duke of Orléans sold all the paintings in the Gallery. A large proportion ended up in England, as well as in the collections of discerning art lovers throughout Europe. It is thanks to Jacques Couché, engraver to the Duke’s Cabinet, that we have a record of this collection, as he had the works and treasures engraved.
