Description
Gaspard GABAUT (1814–1882), The Battle of Melegnano, Italy, 1859, watercolour and gouache highlights on paper, signed and dated lower right – approx. 39 x 61.5 cm (visible area) (a few foxing spots)
COMMENT: As a watercolourist attached to the Ministry of War, Gaspard GABAUT documented the battles of the Second Empire, notably during the Second Italian War of Independence, which pitted French and Piedmontese troops against Austrian forces. On 9 June 1859, in the wake of their victory at Milan, the French captured the town of Melegnano and drove back the Austrian Empire, thereby opening the route to Lombardy for the Franco-Italian allies.
