Oscar ZALAMEDA (1930–2010) - PHILIPPINES, Fishing Village, mixed media (oil, gouache and casein) on heavy paper mounted on black board, probably the 1960s, signed lower right - Approx. 42.4 x 52.4 cm (sheet tends to curl slightly; stain in the lower centre; in good overall condition)
PROVENANCE: Private collection, Paris.
COMMENT: A leading figure of Philippine modernism, Oscar Zalameda trained in the United States before spending time in Europe, notably in Paris. Influenced by Cubism and post-war abstraction, he developed a highly personal style, characterised by fragmented forms and great graphic freedom. Villages and scenes of fishermen, inspired by his native country, were among his favourite themes. In this particularly minimalist composition, the landscape is reduced to a few lines and splashes of colour, straddling the boundary between figuration and abstraction.
