Description
TRANSPORT – AIRPLANE – “The contest between the train and the aeroplane – London–Manchester by PAULHAN”. Photolithograph based on a photograph by Maurice BRANGER (1874–1950), on vellum paper. Full margins. The 1910 air race from London to Manchester pitted two aviators against each other, each attempting to win an aerial challenge between London and Manchester in a motorised ‘heavier-than-air’ aircraft. This challenge was originally proposed by the Daily Mail newspaper in 1906. The Frenchman Louis Paulhan won the prize of 10,000 pounds in April 1910. 39 x 57 cm.
