Kedrenos, Georgios
Dejanija zerkownye i grashdanskie ot Roshdestwa Christowa do polowiny pjatnadzatogo stoletja. (Ecclesiastical and civil events from the Nativity of Christ to the middle of the 15th century). 2 parts (of 3), i.e. volumes. Translated from Middle Greek into Church Slavonic by Ioann Ioannovich Sidorovsky. With 6 illustrated or ornamental woodcut vignettes. Moscow, Synod Press, Nov. 1794. 2 unnumbered leaves. (Title page, dedication page), 200 leaves and 1 unnumbered leaf (intertitle), 228 folio leaves on white and thicker mint-green paper. Contemporary leather binding on six false bands over cardboard covers with a floral-ornamented title in blind embossing and a handwritten title label (buffed at the corners and edges, torn at the headbands and joints, rubbed and stained, first 3 leaves loose).
First, expanded Church Slavonic edition of the world chronicle by the Byzantine historian Kedrenos, written around 1100. – Extremely rare on the market and in institutions, even as individual volumes. According to WorldCat, only one historical copy is known to exist outside Russia (Berlin State Library, lost during the war). – First and second parts (of 3) of the first Church Slavonic edition of Georgios Kedrenos’ (also Kedrin, Cedrenus) historical compendium, which spans from the biblical creation of the world to the year 1057. The translator, Ioann Ioannovich Sidorovsky (1748–95), a clergyman and member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, added numerous notes—particularly of an archaeological nature—to Kedrenos’ synopsis, which had been compiled from various sources, and extended his account by a further 500 years to the mid-15th century. - Provenance: A three-line owner’s inscription in ink, added c. 1900 on the recto of the front endpaper, naming the Church of the Protection and Intercession of the Mother of God, Trubchevsk, Bryansk, Russia. - The third part, containing Sidorovskij’s extension covering the 11th to 15th centuries, is missing. - Some pages and endpapers bear marginal notes in ink by an earlier hand. - The book block is broken at the joint in places. The first 20 leaves show minor worming throughout; some of these leaves are loose and have slight damage to the margins. Slight finger and dirt stains on the foot, outer spine and edges; slight water stains on the margins in places. Overall, a clean copy of this extremely rare volume.
