Economics and Political Science List, Friedrich The National System of Political Economy. Volume One (all previously published material). International Trade, Trade Policy and the German Customs Union. Second, entirely unaltered edition. Stuttgart and Tübingen, Cotta, 1842. LXVIII (recte LXX), 589 pages. Half-leather binding circa 1900 with gold-stamped title on spine and gilt spine. (Spine slightly stained and faded). Second edition, probably a title edition of the first edition from the previous year. – Kress C 5545. – Menger 85. – PMM 311. - Friedrich List’s pioneering advocacy of economic nationalism, which drew on the nationalist and Romantic ideas of Alexander Hamilton and Adam Müller, from whom List also adopted his rejection of the ideas of Adam Smith. List regarded the principle of free trade as detrimental to the national interest, to which the immediate interests of groups and individuals should be subordinated. For List, the nation was a unit whose aim was not the creation of prosperity through international exchange, but the development of its own economic and productive resources. Second edition, likely a reprint of the first edition from the previous year. Half-leather binding, circa 1900, with a gold-stamped title on the spine and a gilded spine. (Spine slightly stained and faded). - “His view coincided so exactly with the reawakening of German nationalism that List’s book caused a great sensation when it was published, and it remained for seventy years the theoretical gospel of the advocates of protectionist tariffs in Germany, Britain and the United States” (Carter/M.). - Title page with underlining (name and title, with a small hole in the white margin).
